Encounter by accident:……Partridges!
After at least two houres birding in the Nieuwe Driemanspolder between The Hague and Zoetermeer, without outstanding results, I decided to go home. When I left the parking I saw a group of birds, aroud twenty, flying just above the meadow near the road. I knew it immediatily, although I had’nt seen them for many […]
Another rare bird: a juvenile Red-Footed Falcon.
This juvenile Red-Footed Falcon is a migratory bird and visits occasionally in small numbers the Netherlands, on their way to the southern part of Africa. He (or she) stays already almost two weeks in Rhoonse Grienden near the Rotterdam Harbour. It’s not shy, on the contrary! It poses without any fear amid about fifteen birdwatchers […]

The dipper, very very rare in the Netherlands
I observed these dipper this year several times in Switzerland, in the Iffigbach near Lenk im Simmental in Berner Oberland. The Iffigbach is a fast streaming mountainriver. I saw the dipper flying immidiately above the water, and sitting on a stone in the river. He forages under water!! The frontside of the legs is light.
The big disaster of Wagejot.
Wagejot is an important breeding area on the Isle of Texel in the Netherlands. Mid June the national newspapers reported alarming tidings of thousands of sandwich terns dying as consequence of an explosion of bird influenza. All over the Isle you could find dead sandwich terns and different types of seagulls. Watch the dead juvenile […]
The most beautiful place on the isle of Texel!
Last month I visited the isle of Texel. It is known as the Bird isle. I’ll give a photographical impression. For me the slufter is the most impressive landscape. The Northsea enters the isle where the dunes swerve… This is the western part of the isle. In June you can meet here the female Common […]
The only one (left?)….purple waterhen deep in the reeds!
I think it was half december 2021 when all the birdwatchers in the Netherlands got unbelievable tidings: an observation of a purper waterhen near Kinderdijk, shortly after followed by another observation at Zevenhuizerplas. However, the purper waterhen at Zevenhuizerplas disappeared within a week and from that moment it has not been seen again. The purple […]
Night heron “serious in danger”!
The night heron was since the fourteenth century a quite normal appearance in the Wetlands of te Netherlands. The first known establishment was in the neigbourhood of the city of Gouda in the province of South Holland. However, nowadays the night heron is rather rare in the Netherlands, with 25 to 40 nesting pairs. As […]
Reed-bunting
This is my first reed-bunting of 2022, in a group of about 10 – 15 male reed-buntings, obviously coming back from southern regions, to establish territories. PHOTO OF THE MONTH APRIL 2022 ! I posted this photo on Istagram, but I prefer the other one with the brilliance in the eye.
